The accession consists of the records of SIO Facilities Manager James Blattenberger. The collection is divided into six series: Subject Files, UCSD Capital Program, Project Files, Space Series, Committee Series and Parking Series. The accession also includes one box of files of Blattenberger's administrative assistant, Shirley Bentley. The accession documents space utilization, planning, construction, and facilities management at SIO during the period 1976-1993. The accession also includes some files documenting space utilization back to 1965 which were given to Blattenberger by Jeffery D. Frautschy. Subject Files, arranged alphabetically, include material on the administration of SIO, the planning of space and specific facilities, files documenting conferences and meetings, and files on subjects relevant to facilities management, such as SIO telecommunications, police, parking and computer facilities. UCSD Capital Program series includes information generated by SIO when planning projects for the UCSD Minor and Major Capital Program. Project Files include files on specific projects, including files on virtually every building at SIO. This series includes extensive files on the Stephen Birch Aquarium Museum, Nierenberg Hall, and IGPP II. The Space Series includes studies and lists of space use at SIO, including periodic space audits. These files also include documentation of committee actions related to space, and memoranda documenting space assignments. The Committee Series includes files of committees on which Blattenberger served, and files of committees relevant to space planning and facilities management. These include records of the Capital Outlay and Space Advisory Committee, the Chancellor's Parking and Transportation Alternative Advisory Committee, and the Security Advisory Committee. Some records of the Marine Sciences Physical Planning Committee can be found in this series, additional MSPPC files are in the Subject Series. The Parking Series includes one cubic foot of records on parking on the SIO campus.
